Aspergillus is a huge group of molds found all over the world.

This group includes several hundred different species. Some of these molds are very helpful to humans. Other species can cause sickness in people or animals. Because they are so important to science and industry, scientists study them closely. They help us understand how living things work.

These molds grow in many different ways. Most Aspergillus species are conidial fungi, which means they grow by making asexual spores. This is how they spread and make more of themselves. Some species also have a sexual stage, which is a different way to reproduce. Many species love to grow in places with lots of oxygen. They can also grow in spots with high osmotic pressure. This means they can live in places with lots of salt or sugar.

A scientist named Pier Antonio Micheli first studied these molds. He was a priest and a biologist from Italy. He cataloged them way back in 1729. When he looked at them under a microscope, he saw a special shape. The shape reminded him of an aspergillum. An aspergillum is a tool used to sprinkle holy water. Because of this, he gave the group its name.

There are many specific kinds of Aspergillus to know. For example, Aspergillus niger is very useful for making citric acid. It makes over 2.54 million metric tonnes of it every year. This acid is used in many foods around the world. Another kind, Aspergillus oryzae, helps make soy sauce and sake. However, some species can be harmful. Aspergillus fumigatus is a common cause of lung infections in people.

You might find these molds in your own home. Some species like to grow in warm, damp places. They can be found on bathroom walls or near window frames. Some even grow on starchy foods like bread or potatoes. You might even find them in millions of pillows. Scientists use their DNA to learn more about how they grow. This helps us use the good ones and stop the bad ones.
