Fungiculture

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Fungiculture is the special practice of growing fungi like mushrooms. People do this to create many useful things. They grow them for delicious food and for medicine. Some fungi are even used for building materials.

Even animals like leafcutter ants and termites practice their own kind of fungiculture. For humans, growing mushrooms is a way to turn natural materials into valuable products. It is a skill that helps provide food for many people around the world.

Growing mushrooms works differently than growing plants. Plants use sunlight to make their own energy through photosynthesis. Mushrooms do not do this. Instead, they get all their energy from a growth medium called a substrate. This substrate can be many things like wood chips, straw, or even used coffee grounds.

To start, growers use mycelium, which is the actively growing part of the fungus. They perform a step called inoculation to add this starter to the substrate. This allows the mycelium to spread and grow through the food.

There are different ways to farm these fungi. For hundreds of years, people have grown mushrooms on logs outdoors. This is a traditional method for making shiitake mushrooms.

Growers drill holes into hardwood logs like oak or maple. They fill these holes with mycelium and seal them with hot wax. The logs then sit under trees for 12 to 15 months. After soaking the logs in water, the mushrooms begin to grow.

Indoor farming is another very important method. This kind of growing was first developed in caves in France. The caves were great because they stayed cool and damp all year.

Later, this technology moved to the United Kingdom in the late 1800s. Today, most commercial mushrooms are grown in indoor trays. This allows farmers to control the light, heat, and moisture. It also helps keep out pests like flies or tiny mites.

Farming mushrooms involves many careful stages. First, the substrate is prepared through composting. Next comes spawning, where the starter culture is added. Then comes casing, which is adding a top covering to the growth layer.

The most difficult part is called pinning. This is when the first tiny mushroom shapes appear. Growers must carefully manage the air and temperature to make this happen. Once the mushrooms are ripe, they are ready for the final harvest.
