In ancient Egypt, it was a main food. People used it to make bread and beer.

Wild emmer is different from the wheat we see today. It has long, sharp spikes called awns. These awns help the seeds move into the soil. At night, they move like a swimming frog kick.

This helps the seeds stay buried in the ground.

Today, emmer grows in many mountain areas. It can grow in poor soil and resist disease. In Italy, it is known as farro.

Some people call it "true" farro because of its high quality. You can eat it in salads, soups, or desserts. In Armenia, people make a warm porridge with it. It is a tasty grain with a very long history.
