Triticale is a very special kind of grain. It is a hybrid made by mixing wheat and rye.

People value this plant because it combines the best parts of both parents. It has the high grain quality and yield of wheat. At the same time, it has the strength of rye. Rye helps the plant survive in tough soil and fight off diseases. This makes triticale a very useful crop for farmers around the world.

Making triticale is a careful job for scientists. To create it, they use wheat as the female parent. They use rye as the male parent to provide pollen. The first plants created this way were sterile. This means they could not make seeds on their own. To fix this, scientists used a chemical called colchicine. This chemical helps the plant's chromosomes double so it can reproduce.

People first began working on this in the late 19th century. In 1873, Alexander Wilson tried to fertilize wheat flowers with rye pollen. He found the plants were sterile, much like a mule. Later, in 1888, a partially fertile version called "Tritosecale Rimpaui Wittmack" was made. It was not until 1937 that scientists used colchicine to make the plants viable. The first commercial variety finally became available to farmers in 1970.

Today, many different countries grow this important crop. The main producers are Poland, Germany, Belarus, France, and Russia. In 2014, 37 countries harvested a total of 17.1 million tons.

Scientists also work to make it even better. A group called CIMMYT has a program to improve nutrition and food production. They want to help developing countries by making crops that grow well. They have even helped some lines grow over 10 tons per hectare.

You might see triticale in many different places. It is a very important feed grain for animals. Some research even shows it can be used for bioethanol energy. You might find it in breakfast cereals at the store. It can also be used to make things like pasta, cookies, and pizza dough. It even has more protein and lysine than regular wheat.
