A crop is a plant we harvest for human use.

People grow these plants on a large scale. They provide us with food, fiber for clothes, and even fuel. Some crops serve many different purposes at once. For example, maize can be food for people. It can also be animal feed or biofuel. This makes crops very important to our daily lives. They are central to how human societies work and grow.

Farmers use many different methods to grow their plants. Some use monoculture, which means growing only one type of plant in a field. Others use crop rotation to grow different plants in a sequence. This can help keep the soil healthy over time. In the Southeast US, farmers might rotate corn, winter wheat, and soybeans. Some people use polyculture to grow many plants together in one place. They might even use a nurse crop to protect young seedlings.

Other special plants like trap crops help keep pests away from the main harvest.

History shows that crops have always been vital to humans. The first agricultural revolution changed everything for early societies. During this time, people began to domesticate plants for food and trade. Since then, our ability to grow plants has changed a lot. We now study crops through many sciences like agronomy and horticulture. Horticulture is the science of growing plants like fruits and flowers. Forestry is another way we manage plant growth for timber.

Global production of crops has grown very quickly lately. Between 2000 and 2023, production rose by 61 percent. This means we grew 9.9 billion tonnes of primary crops. In 2023, just four crops made up half of all production. These were sugar cane, maize, wheat, and rice.

Sugar cane alone accounted for 20 percent of that total. Cereals were the largest group, making up 32 percent of production. This growth happened because of better farming and more irrigation.

Crops connect to almost everything we eat and use. Many of the 50,000 edible plant species are now domesticated. However, only about 300 of those species are used as crops. Most of our cropland is used for just fifteen plant species. Rice, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and maize are the top five.

These plants provide much of the energy we need every day. Even our clothes come from crops like cotton and hemp. The world stays connected through the trade of these important plants.
