Polymer engineering

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Polymer engineering is a specialized field of engineering. It focuses on designing, analyzing, and modifying polymer materials. This field covers many industrial areas. It includes the petrochemical industry and the study of polymerization. Engineers also look at the structure and characterization of these materials. They study how the structure of a polymer relates to its properties. This knowledge allows them to create specific applications for various needs.

To understand polymers, we must look at their molecular structure. In 1920, H. Standinger proposed a vital concept. He suggested that polymers are long-chain molecules. These chains are connected by structural units through covalent bonds. This idea formed the foundation of modern polymer science. Later, a scientist named Carothers divided synthetic polymers into two groups. He identified polycondensates, which come from polycondensation reactions. He also identified addition polymers, which come from polyaddition reactions.

Engineers classify polymers into three main types: thermoplastics, elastomers, and thermosets. Thermoplastics are plastics that soften when heated. They harden again when they cool down. This process is reversible and can be repeated many times. Most daily plastics, like polyethylene and nylon, are thermoplastics. They often have low density and can be transparent. Elastomers are materials that can return to their original shape after being stretched. They have very low moduli, which means they are very flexible. They are useful for absorbing vibrations.

Thermosets are the third major category. These materials start as a liquid during the molding process. They undergo a cross-linking curing process to become hard. Once they are cured, they are insoluble and infusible. This means they cannot be melted or softened again. Thermosets are often used in composite materials. These composites are reinforced with stiff fibers like fiberglass or aramids. This stabilization makes them very strong. Because they have low density, they are ideal for lightweight structures.

The history of polymers is full of important discoveries. The term "polymer" was first introduced by the Swedish chemist J. J. Berzelius. In 1839, Charles Goodyear made a breakthrough with rubber vulcanization. This turned natural rubber into a practical material. In 1870, J. W. Hyatt used camphor to make nitrocellulose plastics industrial. In 1907, L. Baekeland reported the first synthetic plastic, a phenolic resin. In the 1950s, K. Ziegler and G. Natta discovered a coordination polymerization catalyst. This discovery helped start the era of stereoregular polymers.

Polymers are used in many specific ways today. Polyethylene comes in different types, such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE). HDPE has better thermal and mechanical properties than low-density versions. It is used for pipes and containers. Polypropylene is another common polymer with high chemical resistance. It has the lowest density among commodity plastics. It is used for medical applications and chemical tanks. Composites are also widely used in high-tech industries. The B-2 Spirit stealth bomber was the first all-composite aircraft.

Modern science also uses polymers in medicine and technology. Biodegradable polymers are very important for healthcare. These materials break down and are absorbed by the body. This is helpful for drug delivery and tissue engineering. Because they dissolve, they do not need to be surgically removed. Since 1960, polymers made from lactic acid have been used in medicine. Additionally, polymeric membranes are used in separation processes. They help separate liquids and gases in many different systems.
