Engineers work with special materials called polymers. These materials can be soft or very hard.

There are three main types of polymers. The first type is called thermoplastics. These plastics get soft when they are heated. They get hard again when they cool down. You can do this many times. Most plastics we use every day are thermoplastics. They include things like nylon and PET.

The second type is called elastomers. These are stretchy materials like rubber. They can change shape when you pull them. Then they snap back to their original size.

The third type is called thermosets. These start as a liquid. They go through a curing process to get hard. Once they are hard, they cannot melt again. They are very strong and light. Engineers use them to make parts for planes. This is why some planes are so light.

Some polymers are also used in medicine. Biodegradable polymers are special. They break down and are absorbed by the body. This means doctors do not have to remove them later.
