Monomer

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Everything big is made of tiny parts. A monomer is one of these small parts. It is a molecule that can join with others. This joining makes a large chain called a polymer. The way these parts join is called polymerization.

Some monomers come from nature. Amino acids are monomers that make proteins. There are about 20 types of amino acids. Nucleotides are monomers that make DNA and RNA. These are found in the cell nucleus. Glucose is a very common natural monomer. It links together to make starch and cellulose.

People also make monomers in labs. These are called synthetic monomers. Ethylene gas is a monomer used to make polyethylene. This is a type of plastic. Other monomers make things like Teflon or PVC.

Sometimes, a polymer uses only one kind of monomer. We call this a homopolymer. Other polymers use two different monomers. These are called copolymers. For example, making nylon needs two different parts. They must be in equal amounts. This is a type of condensation polymerization. In this way, the parts join and give off water.
