Tetrahydrofuran is a clear liquid. Scientists often call it THF.

This liquid is a very good solvent. A solvent is a substance that can dissolve other things. THF can dissolve many different chemical compounds. It is even used to dissolve PVC. This is the plastic used in many pipes and glues. In 3D printing, it helps clean parts. It can also make the finished prints look shiny.

THF helps make new materials. When mixed with strong acids, it makes a polymer. A polymer is a long chain of molecules. This specific polymer helps make spandex. Spandex is the stretchy part of many clothes.

Making THF is a big job. Factories make about 200,000 tonnes of it every year. One way to make it is by using a chemical called 1,4-butanediol. Other ways use things like butane or even sugars.

We must use THF with care. It can catch fire very easily. It can also soak through many types of gloves. If it touches your skin, it can cause dehydration. This means it pulls water out of your skin. It can also react with air to make explosive parts. To stay safe, companies add a special helper to keep it stable.
