Rubber can be soft or sticky. Vulcanization is a way to make it hard and strong.

This process is often called curing. It works by making cross-links. These are tiny bridges between the parts of the rubber. These bridges make the rubber tough. It also helps it last a long time.

Most people use sulfur and heat to do this. This is very common for making car tires. It is also used for shoe soles and hockey pucks.

Charles Goodyear found a way to do this in 1839. He was trying to make better rubber tires. Old tires would get soft in the heat. They would even pick up dirt from the road. One day, he dropped rubber into a hot pan. He added sulfur to the mix. The rubber did not melt. Instead, it became firm. This was a big discovery. He made a system for this by 1844. Other people like Thomas Hancock also worked on this. Today, we use many types of rubber. We use silicone rubber for keypads too.
