Synthetic biopolymer

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Nature creates many useful things called biopolymers. Scientists can make human-made copies of these. We call these copies synthetic biopolymers. These copies can be many different things. They include proteins and sugars called polysaccharides. They can also be things like peptides. Making these in a lab is very helpful. It helps when nature does not have enough.

Making these copies is a hard job. Biopolymers are often very large. This high molecular weight makes them tough to build. It is also hard to copy their shape. Natural biopolymers have a specific spatial arrangement. This shape is vital for how they work. It is not easy to repeat this shape. Scientists want to solve these hard jobs.

There are many ways to build these. One way uses a chemical route. This is called abiotic synthesis. Some use coordination polymerization with Ziegler-Natta catalysts. This makes things like synthetic rubber. Other ways use polycondensation or polyaddition. This can make polyhydroxoalkanoates. Scientists also use enzymes to help. This is called a chemoenzymatic route.

Many important things have been made this way. Native chemical ligation is a special way to make proteins. It works by linking shorter peptides together. This method helped make insulin-like growth factor 1. It also made the M2 membrane protein. This protein comes from the influenza A virus. Scientists even made a part of the green fluorescent protein.

These human-made tools have many uses. They are used in many different fields. They can be used for drug delivery. This helps move medicine through the body. They are also used in tissue engineering. Some are used for medical tests called diagnostics. They can even be used for everyday goods. These tools help us understand life better.
