Synthetic biopolymer

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Nature makes many useful things. These are called biopolymers. People can make human-made copies of them. We call these synthetic biopolymers.

Making these copies is hard work. It is difficult to copy how they look. It is also hard to make them big. But making them in a lab is very helpful. Nature does not always have enough of them. Sometimes, finding them in nature is too slow.

Scientists use many ways to make them. They can use chemical ways. They can also use enzymes. Enzymes are tiny tools that help make changes. One way is called coordination polymerization. This makes things like synthetic rubber.

Another way uses small pieces to make proteins. This is called native chemical ligation. It links short pieces together. This way helped make insulin-like growth factor 1. Scientists also made parts of the influenza A virus.

These copies are used in many ways. They can help carry medicine to the body. They can help build new human tissues. They are also used to make many common goods.
