Nylon is a very special family of man-made materials.

Scientists call these materials synthetic polymers. A polymer is a large molecule made of many smaller parts joined together.

Most nylons have a brownish color and a soft feel. Some types even look and feel just like silk. Because nylon is a thermoplastic, it can be melted and shaped. This means it can become thin fibers, flat films, or many different shapes. People use it for clothes, rugs, and even food packaging.

Making nylon involves a specific way it works called polymerization.

One way to make it is using two different parts called diamines and dicarboxylic acids. If you use specific lengths of carbon chains, you get different types like nylon-6,6. Another family is called nylon-Z, which comes from aminocarboxylic acids. To make the fibers strong, scientists use a method called cold drawing.

This process helps turn the material into the strong threads we use every day. It is a careful way to build very long, tough molecules.

The story of nylon began at a company called DuPont.

In 1927, a man named Charles Stine suggested a new way to organize research teams. He wanted them to find ways to turn chemistry into practical things. A Harvard instructor named Wallace Hume Carothers was hired to lead the polymer group. He spent years studying the theories of a German chemist named Hermann Staudinger. Carothers was very successful and helped improve how we understand all polymers. He died just sixteen months before the world heard about his great invention.

On February 28, 1935, Carothers and his team created the first nylon 6,6.

They worked at the DuPont Experimental Station. Later, a scientist named Paul Schlack developed a different kind called nylon 6 in 1938. DuPont got a patent for the material in September 1938. The first factory to make nylon opened in Seaford, Delaware, on December 15, 1939. This plant was so important that it became a National Historic Chemical Landmark in 1995. These dates show how long it took to turn a lab idea into a real product.

You can see nylon in many things in your own home. It was first used in toothbrushes in 1938. Then, it became famous for women's stockings.

In 1940, people bought 64 million pairs of these stockings in just one year! During World War II, the military used nylon for parachutes and tents.

After the war, people wanted nylon so much that there were even riots in cities like Pittsburgh. Today, it is still a huge part of our lives.
