technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Machines make long, thin threads. These threads make our clothes. We use them for many things. They can be very strong. It is like making long noodles.

Some threads are made by melting hard bits. The melted liquid goes through tiny holes. Then it cools down to become a thread. This makes nylon and polyester.

Other threads use a special liquid. The liquid is pushed through tiny holes. Hot air or a liquid bath makes it hard. This makes spandex and rayon.

Some machines use a charge to make tiny threads. This can make very small fibers. They can even be made without heat.

Last, the threads are pulled to make them strong. This helps them stay in shape. Now the threads are ready to use.
