Most flutes are made of metal or wood. You change the pitch by pressing keys. These keys cover small holes on the tube.

Opening or closing these holes makes high or low sounds.

The flute has a very long history. Long ago, flutes were made of wood without keys. In the Baroque era, people played the traverso. The traverso was a flute with a few keys. It had a soft and sweet sound.

Later, a man named Theobald Boehm changed the design. He added a new system of keys in 1847. This made the flute much easier to play. His design is still used by players today.

There are many types in the flute family. The piccolo is very small and sounds high. The alto flute and bass flute sound much lower.
