Pitch (music)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Pitch is how we hear sound. It lets us judge if a sound is high or low.

This feeling is part of how we hear music. It is different from how loud a sound is. It is also different from the tone or quality of a sound.

Pitch is linked to frequency. Frequency is a way to measure how fast a sound wave vibrates. High pitches come from very fast vibrations. Low pitches come from slow vibrations.

Most people agree on which notes are high or low. We can put these notes on a musical scale.

Some sounds have a definite pitch. This means the pitch is clear and easy to hear. A piano note has a definite pitch. Other sounds have an indefinite pitch. These are harder to name. A snare drum has an indefinite pitch. You can still tell if it is higher than a bass drum.

Musicians use a pitch standard to tune their tools. This helps everyone play together. Since 1939, many use a standard called A440. This means the note A is set to 440 hertz. Hertz is a way to measure the vibrations per second.
