Pitch (music)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Pitch is a special way we hear sound. It is the quality that lets us judge if a melody is high or low.

Pitch is one of the main ways we describe musical tones. It works alongside other things like loudness and how long a sound lasts. This feeling is a personal experience for every listener. We use pitch to order sounds on a musical scale. This makes it possible to create the songs we love to hear.

To understand pitch, we must look at how air vibrates. This vibration is called frequency. Frequency is an objective measurement that scientists can track. It tells us how many cycles happen every second, which we call hertz. High pitches happen when sound waves vibrate very quickly. Low pitches happen when the waves move much slower.

Even though pitch is a feeling, it is almost always decided by this speed. The intensity or loudness of the wave does not change the pitch itself.

Scientists have studied how we perceive pitch for a long time. They use different theories to explain how our ears and brains work together. One idea is called place theory. This says our brains know the pitch based on where the sound hits our inner ear. Another idea is temporal theory. This suggests our brains track the timing of the sound vibrations.

These studies help us understand how the human auditory system processes the world around us.

Not all sounds have a clear note that you can name. Sounds with a definite pitch have a clear pattern of vibrations. For example, a musical note has a fundamental frequency and many overtones. These overtones are also called partials. Other sounds have an indefinite pitch. A snare drum is a good example of this.

You cannot easily name a specific note for a snare drum. However, you can still tell if it sounds higher than a bass drum.

Musicians need to work together to sound good. They do this by using a pitch standard to tune their instruments. This is a shared reference point for everyone in the group. Since 1939, many people have used a standard called A440. This means the note A is set to 440 hertz.

Other standards exist for different types of music. For example, baroque pitch uses a lower setting of 415 hertz. Using these standards helps musicians play in harmony.
