You can hear this in a barbershop quartet. In these groups, four people sing different parts at once. One person usually sings the main melody line. The other three singers provide harmony parts to support that melody. This combination of sounds makes the music feel full and rich.

Musicians create harmony by placing different pitches or tones together. When notes happen at the same time, they form a chord.

You can build chords in different ways, such as close or open positions. Many Western chords are built using intervals of thirds. This is called tertian harmony. Sometimes, musicians add "tensions" to a chord. A tension is an extra note that creates a rougher sound.

A good song often balances these tense moments with relaxed ones. This movement from tension to relaxation is called resolving.

People have studied the rules of harmony for many centuries. The word comes from the Greek word "harmonia," which means to fit together.

An ancient writer named Aristoxenus wrote a famous book called Elements of Harmony. He believed that the listener's ear determines what sounds harmonious. Earlier, the Pythagoreans studied how mathematical ratios between notes create consonant sounds. For example, a 1:2 ratio describes an octave relationship. This shows how math and art connect in music.

Different cultures use harmony in very special ways. In Western music, chords often move in a set order called a progression.

However, South Asian music, like Hindustani or Carnatic music, uses a different approach. Instead of moving chords, they often use a drone. A drone is a single note that stays the same throughout a piece. This provides a steady foundation for the music. While Western music often uses written notes, Indian classical music relies heavily on improvisation. This shows how many ways there are to make music beautiful.

Understanding harmony helps us recognize the patterns in the songs we love. It explains why some notes sound sweet and others sound rough. We call sweet sounds "consonant" and rough sounds "dissonant." Even a simple unison, where two people sing the exact same note, is a type of harmony. In pop music, this is sometimes called doubling. By learning about harmony, we can better appreciate the skill of every performer. Whether it is a large band or a single singer, harmony brings the music to life.
