Vocal range

arts Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Your voice can make many different pitches. This span of sounds is called vocal range. It is the distance from your lowest note to your highest note.

In singing, experts often use a more specific definition. They look for the notes that are musically useful. This means the notes a singer can actually use in a song. For example, opera singers must sing loud enough to be heard over a huge orchestra. They do not use microphones to help them. Because of this, their usable range depends on how well they can project. Pop artists can use a microphone to include much quieter notes.

The human voice makes sound in a part of the throat called the larynx. There are different ways to make these sounds. These different ways are called vocal registers. Scientists identify four main registers. They are the whistle register, the falsetto register, the modal register, and the vocal fry register. Most singers use the modal register for normal speech and most songs. However, some singers use other registers to reach special notes. A coloratura soprano might use the whistle register for very high notes. A countertenor might use the falsetto register to sing high.

Scientists also study why human voices sound different. On average, the high notes in male voices are half as high as in female voices. Even when comparing people of the same height, male voices stay lower. Charles Darwin suggested that these differences grew through a process called sexual selection. This means that choices made by mates helped shape the voice over time. Research by Puts showed that preferences for pitch can change. For instance, women may prefer different male pitches at different times. Men also change their pitch based on how much power they feel they have.

People use vocal range to help group singers into voice types. A voice type is more than just a range. It also includes vocal weight and vocal timbre, which is the unique sound of a voice. Teachers also look at tessitura, or where a voice feels most comfortable. Most systems group women into three main categories. These are the soprano, the mezzo-soprano, and the contralto. Men are usually divided into four main groups. These are the countertenor, the tenor, the baritone, and the bass. Children's voices are often called trebles.

Different musical traditions use different systems to name these voices. Classical music uses systems like the German Fach or the Italian tradition. These systems help opera houses pick the right singers for specific roles. In choral music, the groups are often simpler. Women are usually split into soprano and alto. Men are split into tenor and bass. In the UK, a man singing in the alto section is called a male alto. In other places, people usually call this a countertenor. No single system is used by everyone in the world.
