Dongzhi

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dongzhi is a special time that marks the winter solstice. This is the day with the shortest daylight and the longest night of the year.

In the traditional Chinese calendar, it is the 22nd solar term. The name Dongzhi can mean "the coming of winter." It usually falls between December 21 and December 23. This festival is a way to celebrate the victory of light over darkness. People believe that after this day, the daylight hours will slowly grow longer. This brings a sense of balance and harmony to life.

Families celebrate this day by eating many different kinds of food together. In many communities, people make and eat tangyuan. These are round balls made of glutinous rice flour.

They can be pink or green and are served in sweet soup or savory broth. Tangyuan symbolize a family reunion. In China, some people also eat dumplings called shuijiao. A famous doctor named Zhang Zhongjing once shared lamb dumplings with the poor. He wanted to help them stay warm and prevent chilblains on their ears.

Because the dumplings look like ears, they are a special tradition.

The history of Dongzhi goes back a very long time. The Chinese people first celebrated it during the Zhou dynasty. This was between 1045 BCE and 256 BCE. Later, it became an official celebration during the Han dynasty.

During the Han period, people would take breaks from work to be with family. They would worship heaven and honor their ancestors. They might burn joss paper at shrines to show gratitude. In ancient times, people called it the "festival of extreme length." This was because the sun's position makes shadows very long.

Different places have their own unique ways to observe this solar term. In Korea, the day is sometimes called "Small Seol." People there make a red bean porridge called patjuk.

They also add round rice cakes called saealsim to the porridge. In Japan, the term is called Tōji. Some people in Japan drink hot grapefruit water or eat pumpkin. In Taiwan, people often eat "tonic" foods to stay healthy.

They might enjoy mutton hot pot or ginger duck hot pot to nourish their bodies during the cold months.

Dongzhi connects people to the natural world and the changing seasons. The solar term is divided into three parts called pentads. These are named after things happening in nature. One pentad is when earthworms form knots as they hibernate. Another is when deer shed their antlers. The last one is when spring water begins to move. These signs show that the earth is changing. Even today, many people feel a year older right after Dongzhi. It is a time to look forward to the returning light.
