It is the heart of Indian classical music. Musicians use a raga as a guide. They follow rules to play certain notes. But they also make up new parts as they play. This is called improvisation.

Ragas can change how you feel. People say they can "color the mind." Some ragas match a season or a time of day. Some ragas are short like a song. Others are very big. A big raga like Malkauns can last over an hour.

Every raga has its own personality. A musician picks a starting note called shadja. They also use a special note called a vadi. The vadi is the most important note. The musician pays extra attention to it.
