Paddlers use a decked boat to move through a course. This course has 18 to 25 hanging gates. Each gate has two poles on a wire. Some gates are green for downstream travel. Other gates are red for upstream travel. To pass a gate correctly, the athlete's head and part of the boat must go through it.

Rules keep the race fair. If a boat touches a pole, two seconds are added to the time. If a racer misses a gate, they get a 50-second penalty. Most racers finish the course in 80 to 120 seconds.

Boats have changed a lot over time. Early boats were heavy and made of fiberglass. Today, boats use light materials like carbon fiber and Kevlar. This helps them turn quickly.

This sport is part of the Summer Olympics. It has been a regular event since 1992. Many Olympic courses are manmade concrete channels. This helps athletes train on steady rapids.
