You use a single-bladed paddle to move the boat. People use canoes on lakes, rivers, and even oceans. Some people use them for canoe camping. This means they travel to camp in nature.

Canoeing is a very old way to travel. Modern sport canoeing began in the late 1800s. A man named Carl Smith brought it to Sweden. In 1924, groups from four countries joined together. They formed a group that led to the International Canoe Federation, or ICF. This group has over 170 members today. It includes groups from America, Canada, and Britain.

Many people love to race canoes. Canoe sprint is a race held at the Summer Olympics.

Another sport is canoe slalom. In this sport, you move through gates on river rapids. You must do this in the fastest time. One man, Verlen Kruger, paddled over 100,000 miles. That is a very long way!
