Canoeing is an activity that involves moving across water using a canoe and a single-bladed paddle.

This practice can be a simple way to travel or a highly organized competitive sport. People use canoes on many different types of water. You might see them on calm lakes or slow streams. They are also used on large oceans, ponds, and rushing rivers. In some parts of Europe, the term canoeing covers both canoeing and kayaking. In these regions, people often call a canoe an "open canoe" or a "Canadian."

The mechanism of canoeing relies on the interaction between the paddle and the water. A person sits or kneels in the canoe and uses a paddle with one blade. By dipping the blade into the water and pulling, the person creates movement. This motion allows the vessel to glide through the water. This method is used for various purposes, from quiet travel to intense racing. Some people use this skill for canoe camping. This involves traveling long distances to reach camping spots in nature.

There are many distinct types of canoeing disciplines. Some focus on speed, such as canoe sprint racing. Other forms focus on endurance, like the canoe marathon. There are also more specialized sports like canoe polo and playboating. Whitewater canoeing is another way people use these boats on moving water. One specific competitive sport is canoe slalom. In slalom, athletes navigate a decked canoe through a course of gates. These gates hang above the river rapids. The goal is to pass through the gates in the fastest time possible.

Canoeing has a very long history as a mode of transportation. While it is an ancient way to travel, modern recreational canoeing began later. It was established as a hobby and sport in the late 19th century. A man named Carl Smith was an early promoter of the sport. He introduced canoeing to Sweden during the 1880s. His work helped turn an ancient travel method into a modern activity. This helped set the stage for organized competitions to follow.

As the sport grew, international groups formed to manage it. In 1924, associations from four countries joined together. These countries were Austria, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. They founded the Internationalen Representation for Kanusport. This organization was the forerunner of the International Canoe Federation, known as the ICF. Today, the ICF is a very large global organization. It includes more than 170 national canoe associations and federations. These members include groups from America, Canada, Britain, Scotland, and Wales.

Canoeing reached a high level of global significance when it joined the Olympic Games. It became part of the Summer Olympics in 1936. The Olympics feature specific disciplines like canoe sprint. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also recognizes canoe slalom as an Olympic event. This shows how much skill is required for high-level competition. Athletes must master the water to succeed on the world stage.

Individual athletes have achieved incredible feats within the sport. One notable person was Verlen Kruger. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, he paddled an immense distance. He paddled over 100,000 miles during his lifetime. This is the most miles paddled by anyone in the sport. Such numbers show the dedication required for long-distance paddling. Whether for sport or for travel, canoeing remains a powerful way to connect with the water.
