Mountaineering is a collection of outdoor activities where people climb mountains.

Some people enjoy skiing or moving along paths called via ferratas. Others focus on rock climbing, bouldering, or even climbing on indoor walls. Unlike many other sports, mountaineering does not have one set of formal rules. Instead, climbers follow different techniques and use guidebooks to help them. Many local alpine clubs provide resources and social events for these climbers. The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation, or UIAA, is the world organization for this sport.

Climbing mountains can change the land and the people living nearby. It affects things like the soil, plants, and animals in different zones. Tourism in these areas can change how people work, moving from farming to service jobs. This can have a positive effect on the local environment. However, the impact often depends on how high up the mountain the activity happens. This is because the environment changes as you go higher in altitude. The way people live can also change when they meet different cultures through travel.

People have been in the mountains since very long ago. The remains of a man named Ötzi were found in a glacier. He lived in the 4th millennium BC in the Ötztal Alps. In the past, high mountains were often seen as holy or magical places. Many people climbed for religious, political, or economic reasons. A famous early climb happened in 1492 when Antoine de Ville climbed Mont Aiguille. He used ropes, ladders, and iron hooks to reach the top. This event is often called the birth of mountaineering.

Many famous peaks were reached during this era. In 1786, Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard climbed Mont Blanc. Women also began to climb, like Marie Paradis in 1808. The Alpine Club was founded in 1857 in Britain. One very famous and dramatic climb was the Matterhorn in 1865. This climb was led by an illustrator named Edward Whymper. During this time, the white edelweiss flower became a symbol for climbers.

Mountaineers eventually traveled to every part of the world. They explored the mountains of Norway and the high Andes. In Africa, people climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 1889. The biggest challenge was the huge Himalayas in Asia. In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the top of Mount Everest.

This is the highest mountain on Earth. Other very high peaks like K2 were climbed later in 1954. Today, climbers continue to explore these amazing, snowy places.
