sports Maturity 5-7 Next article →

An ultramarathon is a footrace that is longer than a standard marathon. People who compete in these long races call themselves ultra runners. It is a sport that tests how much a person can endure. Runners might race on smooth roads or bumpy forest trails. Some even run through steep mountains or hot deserts. These races can be very hard because of the weather or the hills.

Many people love the challenge of seeing how far they can go.

There are two main ways to run an ultramarathon. The first way is to run a set distance. Common distances include 50 kilometers or 100 miles. The second way is to run for a set amount of time. In these timed races, the winner is the person who covers the most distance. These events can last for 6, 12, or even 24 hours. Some multiday races last for 48 hours or even six days. Some runners even race in stages with breaks to sleep.

Ultramarathons have very deep roots in history. The Spartathlon is a famous race based on a real story from Greece. A messenger named Pheidippides ran from Athens to Sparta during the Battle of Marathon. He did this run in one and a half days to ask for help. Today, many races are held to honor such great feats of endurance. Some of the oldest and largest races are held on roads. The Comrades Marathon in South Africa is one of the most famous. It has more than 10,000 finishers every single year.

Different groups help organize these big events and keep track of records. The International Association of Ultrarunners, or IAU, holds many World Championships. They oversee races for 50 km, 100 km, and 24-hour events. Another group called GOMU holds championships for races that last 48 hours or six days. World Athletics also recognizes records for the 50 km and 100 km distances. These organizations make sure the results are fair for all runners. They help runners from every country compete on a global stage.

Ultra running is a global community with people in almost every land. In Japan, runners take on the Trans Japan Alps Race. This race crosses the Japan Alps over seven days. In Morocco, the Marathon des Sables takes runners through the Sahara desert. Even in India, people run the La Ultra across high mountain passes. More than 600,000 people complete ultramarathons around the world every year. Whether on a track or a mountain, it is a sport for everyone.
