There are many ways to race. Some races cover a set distance. Common distances are 50 km or 50 miles. Other races are timed. In these, the winner runs the most distance in a set time. These can last for 6, 12, or 24 hours. Some even last for many days.

Runners face many challenges. They might run on roads or trails. Some races go through mountains or deserts. Runners must deal with hills and bad weather. To help, they use aid stations. These are spots to get food and drink. In some stage races, runners must carry all their own gear. One example is the Marathon des Sables in the Sahara desert.

People run these races all over the world. The Comrades Marathon in South Africa is very large. It has over 10,000 finishers each year. The Spartathlon is another famous race. It is based on a run from Athens to Sparta in Greece. Ultra running is a big test of skill and grit.
