People do many things in the mountains. They might go skiing or walk on rocky paths. Some people even climb on walls indoors.

In the past, people climbed for work or religion. They did not do it just for fun. One famous climb happened in 1492. A man named Antoine de Ville used ropes and hooks. This is often called the birth of mountaineering. Later, people began to climb for pleasure.

A time called the Golden Age of Alpinism began in the 1800s.

During this time, many high peaks were reached. Climbers even used science to study the mountains. A small white flower called edelweiss became a symbol for them.

Mountaineers soon traveled all over the world. They climbed in Norway and Africa. They also explored the huge Himalayas in Asia. In 1953, a big goal was met. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the top of Mount Everest.
