Some climbers try to finish a route on their first try, which is called an onsight. Others might spend many years working on one difficult path, called a project. Once they finally succeed, it is known as a redpoint ascent. Climbing is a way to test your skill and strength against the earth.

Climbing often works as a team effort between two people.

One person is the lead climber who moves up the rock. The other person is the belayer who stays at the bottom. The belayer holds the rope using a mechanical belay device. This device can lock the rope quickly if the climber falls. If the lead climber reaches the top, they set an anchor. Then, the second person can climb up while the first person belays from above. This teamwork keeps everyone safe while they explore high places.

This sport has a long and interesting history.

Many types of climbing started in Europe during the late 19th century. Bouldering, which is climbing short routes, began in Fontainebleau. Big wall climbing has roots in the Dolomites mountains. Single-pitch climbing started in the Lake District and in Saxony. Over time, climbers moved from using mechanical aids to free climbing. Free climbing means you only use your body to move upward. This change helped the sport grow into what it is today.

There are many different kinds of rock to climb.

Climbers have found over 43 different types of climbable rock. Granite is popular for its large cracks, like at El Capitan. Limestone is famous for having detailed holds and cracks. Sandstone is also common and can have very sculpted shapes. Climbers use different tools like rubber shoes and spring-loaded devices. They also use special books called guidebooks to find routes. These books use diagrams called topos to show the way.

Climbing is now a part of the wider world of sports.

People use different systems to grade how hard a climb is. They use the French numerical system or the American YDS. Whether on a small boulder or a massive wall, climbing connects people to nature. It is a sport of skill, focus, and great adventure.
