Quadrupedalism

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Quadrupedalism is a way of moving on four limbs. An animal that does this is called a quadruped. The word comes from Latin words meaning "four feet."

Many different living things use this way to move. You can find quadrupeds among vertebrates and invertebrates. This means they can be animals with backbones or animals without them. This way of moving helps animals bear their weight. It also helps them travel from place to place.

Some animals use four limbs for movement in special ways. The monarch butterfly is a type of quadruped. It is part of the Nymphalidae family. This family has about 6,000 different species. Even though it has six legs, it only uses four to move.

This is different from being a tetrapod. A tetrapod is an animal that comes from a four-limbed ancestor. Some tetrapods do not walk on four legs. Humans use their limbs as arms and hands. Whales use them as fins. Even snakes are tetrapods even though they have no legs.

People can also move using four limbs. We often call this being "on all fours." Babies do this when they are crawling. In the 20th century, Georges Hebert made this movement popular for exercise. There is even a man named Kenichi Ito. He is famous for speed running on four limbs in contests. In July 2005, scientists found a unique family in rural Turkey. Five siblings in the Ulas family walked on their hands and feet. They walked on their palms instead of their knuckles. This let them keep the dexterity of their fingers.

Scientists also build machines that act like animals. In 2005, a group created a robot named BigDog. This team included Boston Dynamics and Foster-Miller. They also worked with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Harvard University. BigDog was a dynamically stable quadruped robot. A newer version of this robot is called Spot. Another robot is named RoboSimian. It was made by NASA JPL and the University of California, Santa Barbara Robotics Lab. This robot focuses on being stable and deliberate. It was shown at the DARPA Robotics Challenge.

Many things we see every day relate to this movement. Most quadrupeds have a horizontal body. This is called a pronograde posture. Many birds also have this same posture. Some extinct dinosaurs had it too. Some apes walk on four limbs using their knuckles. This is called knuckle-walking. This is different from the Ulas family who used palms. Learning how things move helps us understand how life works. It shows how limbs can change for many different jobs.
