The monarch butterfly is a quadruped. It has six legs in total. But it only uses four to move around.

There is another word, tetrapod. This word means an animal comes from a four-limbed ancestor. Most tetrapods are quadrupeds. But some are not. Humans are tetrapods. We have four limbs. Yet we mostly walk on two legs. Whales are tetrapods too. They use fins instead of legs. Even snakes are tetrapods. They just lost their legs long ago.

Some people move on all fours. A family in Turkey was found walking on hands and feet. This is different from how apes walk. Apes use their knuckles to move. This family used their palms. This helped them use their fingers well. Even machines can be quadrupeds. Scientists made a robot named BigDog. It can stay stable on four legs.
