Long ago, most stories were spoken out loud. People used poetry to help them remember the words. They told tales of brave knights and holy saints.

In the Middle Ages, writing changed. It was no longer just for rich nobles. A new group of people, called the bourgeoisie, began to read. Jacob van Maerlant was a very important writer from this time. Some call him the "father of Dutch poetry." Around 1440, groups called rederijkerskamers, or "Chambers of Rhetoric," began to meet. These were clubs for writers. They made plays for the public to enjoy.

Later, writers like Anne Frank shared their lives through writing. Her famous diary tells a very moving story. Today, many different writers still make the Dutch language special.
