There are about 614,350 people who speak Ossetian. UNESCO has listed the language as "vulnerable" since 2009. This means it needs extra care to stay strong.

Speaking Ossetian connects people to a very old history. It belongs to the Eastern Iranian group of languages. It is a relative of languages like Pashto and Yaghnobi. Some experts believe it is a descendant of the extinct Scythian and Sarmatian languages. It is also related to the Alanic language.

In fact, Ossetian may be the only survivor of the Scythian branch. It is a living link to ancient tribes like the Alans. This makes the language a precious treasure from the past.

There are two main ways that people speak Ossetian. These are called dialects. The first is called Digoron, or Digor. It is spoken in the west and is considered more archaic. The second is called Iron. Most people, about five-sixths of the population, speak the Iron dialect.

There was also a third dialect called Jassic. It was once spoken in Hungary but is no longer used. These different ways of speaking show how the language has traveled.

Writing Ossetian has changed many times over the years. The oldest known writing is the Zelenchuk Inscription. It dates back to the 10th or 12th centuries. It was found near a river in Russia.

This old text used the Greek alphabet. Today, many people use the Cyrillic alphabet to write. You can recognize Ossetian by a special letter called Ae. This letter is not found in any other Cyrillic language. It makes the written words look unique.

Ossetian is used in many parts of daily life. People read daily newspapers like Ræstdzinad or Xurzærin. They also read a monthly magazine called Max dug. This magazine features modern poetry and fiction. Kosta Khetagurov was a very important person for the language. He was a national poet from the 1800s. People call him the father of the modern Ossetian literary language. He helped shape how the language is written today.
