The Cherokee language, also called Tsalagi, is a special way of communicating.

It belongs to the Iroquoian language family. This language is the native tongue of the Cherokee people. Today, the language is in a very serious state. UNESCO calls it "critically endangered." This means there are not many people left who speak it fluently. In 2019, a tally showed about 2,100 speakers across three tribes. Most of these speakers are elderly people.

This makes the future of the language a very important job for many people.

Cherokee works in a very different way than English. It is what experts call a polysynthetic language. This means one single word can carry many big ideas. In English, you might need a long sentence to explain something. In Cherokee, a single word can do that whole job. The language uses many parts to build words. About 75% of the language is made of verbs. A verb is an action word.

To make a verb, you must use a prefix, a root, and two different suffixes. This makes the language very complex and beautiful.

For a long time, Cherokee was only a spoken language. It did not have a way to be written down. This changed in the early 1800s because of a man named Sequoyah.

He could not read other scripts before he made his own. He worked very hard on his invention for many years. At first, he tried to make a symbol for every word. He even tried to make a symbol for every idea. Eventually, he realized that was too hard to remember. He finally created a system called a syllabary.

A syllabary is a set of symbols for syllables. Each symbol represents a sound like "ba" or "te." Sequoyah's system has 86 characters. This made it very easy for people to learn to read. Students could learn to read in just a few weeks. This was much faster than learning the English alphabet. In 1825, the Cherokee Nation officially began using this writing system. They used it to print the Cherokee Phoenix. This was the first newspaper published by Native Americans.

Today, people work hard to keep the language alive. There are two main dialects spoken now. The Western dialect is the largest and is used in Oklahoma. The Eastern dialect is spoken in North Carolina.

To help children learn, tribes use immersion schools. The New Kituwah Academy is one such school. There is also the Cherokee Immersion School in Tahlequah. Even technology is helping the language grow. In 2022, Motorola added a Cherokee interface to its smartphones. This helps keep the culture and language part of modern life.
