It belongs to the Iroquoian language family. Long ago, the Cherokee people moved from the Great Lakes. They brought their language with them to the southeast.

Cherokee is a unique language. One single word can share many ideas. In English, you might need many words to say one thing. In Cherokee, a single word can do that job. Most of the language is made of verbs. A verb is an action word.

For a long time, Cherokee was only spoken. It was not written down. Then, a man named Sequoyah made a change.
