Chuvash is a unique language. It is spoken in the Volga-Ural region of Russia.

It belongs to the Turkic language family. But Chuvash is very special. It is the only living language in the Oghur branch. This branch also includes the extinct Bulgar language. Because it is so different, other Turkic speakers cannot understand it.

Many people still value this language. It is an official language in Chuvashia. Schools teach it to children. People also write books in Chuvash. Since 1979, at least 202 books were translated from Chuvash into other tongues. Most of these were moved into Russian. Some experts say the language is endangered. This is because Russian is used more in daily life. Still, the Chuvash people keep their traditions alive through their words.
