language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Kyrgyz is a way of speaking in Central Asia. It is the official language of Kyrgyzstan. Many people also speak it in China and Tajikistan.

It is a Turkic language. This means it is part of a large family of languages. It is very similar to Kazakh and Altay. This makes it easy for speakers to understand each other.

The way Kyrgyz is written has changed many times. Long ago, people used the Göktürk script. Later, they used the Perso-Arabic alphabet. Between 1928 and 1940, they used a Latin script. Today, most people in Kyrgyzstan use the Cyrillic alphabet. This uses letters from the Russian alphabet. In China, people use the Arabic alphabet to write it.

There are two main styles of Kyrgyz. These are called the Northern and Southern dialects. The Northern style is used for standard Kyrgyz. The Northern style uses more words from Mongolian. The Southern style uses more words from Uzbek. Kyrgyz also has a special rule called vowel harmony. This helps the sounds in a word flow together nicely.
