Many people speak it at home. In 2011, almost 170,000 people did. The Navajo people call themselves the Diné. This means "People." They call their language Diné Bizaad.

Navajo has a very special history. During World War II, Navajo soldiers used it for a secret code. These men were called code talkers.

They used Navajo words to send messages. For example, they called a submarine an "iron fish." This code was never broken. It helped win big battles and save many lives.

In the past, it was hard to speak Navajo. Some schools punished children for using it. Today, things are changing. Many schools now use immersion programs. This means students learn mostly in Navajo.
