People call it Nahuatl or Mexicano. Many Nahua people live in central Mexico. Some live in the United States too.

This language is very old. People have spoken it since at least the seventh century. The Mexica people used it to rule central Mexico. Their power made Nahuatl a very important language. Later, people used a Latin script to write it down. They wrote poems, stories, and many other books. This early way of writing is called Classical Nahuatl.

Nahuatl is a very complex language. It uses a special way to make words. It strings small word parts together to make long words.

Many words from Nahuatl moved into Spanish. Then, they moved into other languages like English. You might know words like chocolate, tomato, or avocado. Even the name of the country Mexico comes from Nahuatl.

Today, many people still speak it. In Mexico, it is a national language. It has the same status as Spanish in many areas.
