People write Coptic using a special alphabet. It is based on the Greek alphabet. It also uses seven extra letters from a script called Demotic.

Many dialects of Coptic once existed. Sahidic was a major one used for books. Bohairic is another important dialect. Today, the Coptic Church uses Bohairic for its services.

In the past, many people spoke Coptic in Egypt. Over many centuries, people began to speak Arabic instead. This change was slow. However, some leaders made strict rules to stop Coptic. These rules were very hard on the people.

Coptic is not a language for daily talk today. No one speaks it as their first language. But it is still used in church by priests. Some people today try to help the language grow again. Many Coptic words even live in other languages, like the word "barge."
