It is part of a large family of languages. This family is called the Northern East Sudanic group.

People used Old Nubian for many things. They wrote prayers and songs for church. They also wrote letters and legal papers. Most of these were written on parchment. Parchment is a type of writing paper made from animal skin. They used a special way of writing. It used the Coptic alphabet, which is a set of letters. They added three extra letters to it. These extra letters came from an older way of writing.

Today, people do not speak Old Nubian. But it is the ancestor of Nobiin. Nobiin is a language people still use. In 2021, a new way to print these letters was made. It is called the Sawarda typeface. This helps people learn the old style of writing.
