These signs were not just simple pictures. They used many different parts to make meaning. Some signs showed a whole word. Other signs showed sounds, like an alphabet.

Some signs helped narrow down a word's meaning.

At first, there were about 1,000 signs. Later, the number grew to 5,000 signs.

This writing helped people record their history. It was used on stone walls and also on wood or papyrus. People also made simpler scripts called hieratic and demotic.

For a long time, people forgot how to read them. No one knew the secret for many years. Then, a famous stone was found. It is called the Rosetta Stone.

This stone had the same words in three different scripts. In the 1820s, Jean-François Champollion used it to solve the puzzle. Now, we can read the stories of Ancient Egypt.
