It is a large, dark grey stone. It has a pink line on it. This stone is a fragment of a much larger object called a stele. A stele is a tall stone slab used for important messages.

The stone has three different types of writing on it. The top part uses Egyptian hieroglyphs. These are old picture symbols. The middle part uses a script called Demotic. The bottom part is written in Ancient Greek.

Because the three texts say the same thing, the stone became a key. It helped experts learn how to read the old Egyptian pictures.

Jean-François Champollion shared his work in 1822. He showed how the symbols worked. This helped people read much more about ancient Egypt.
