history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, a Greek leader named Ptolemy I Soter ruled Egypt.

He was a general for Alexander the Great. After Alexander died, Ptolemy took control of Egypt in 305 BC. He started a ruling family called the Ptolemies. This family ruled for nearly 300 years.

The Ptolemies mixed Greek and Egyptian ways. They used the title of pharaoh to show they were leaders. They also built many new temples for Egyptian gods.

The city of Alexandria became a major center for trade and learning.

Many kings in this family were named Ptolemy. Many queens were named Cleopatra.

The kingdom was very rich. However, wars and fights within the family made it weak. Eventually, the Roman Republic took control of Egypt. This happened after the rule of Cleopatra VII. The era of the Ptolemies ended in 30 BC.
