Old Nubian

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Old Nubian is a very old way of speaking.

It was used from the 8th century to the 15th century. This language belonged to the kingdom of Makuria. It was spoken by people living in the Nile valley.

Many scholars believe these were the oldest inhabitants of that area. Today, we call Old Nubian an extinct language. This means people do not speak it anymore. However, it is the ancestor of the modern Nobiin language. It is also a close relative to Dongolawi and Kenzi.

People used this language for many important tasks. They wrote many religious documents like prayers and psalms. They also wrote about daily life using letters and legal papers.

To write, they used a special version of the Coptic alphabet. This alphabet was a slanted style from the White Monastery in Sohag. They added three extra letters to the alphabet. Two of these letters came from the older Meroitic alphabet. They also used a special mark to show certain sounds. They used dots and slashes to act like periods or question marks.

Learning how the language works is quite a big job. The grammar for verbs is the most complex part. A single verb can show many different things at once. It can show the time, like if something is past or present. It can also show if an action is finished or habitual.

The language does not have gender for its nouns. Instead, it uses different endings called cases. These cases help show how a word fits in a sentence. There are four main structural cases used in the language. These include the nominative, accusative, genitive, and dative cases. There are also other cases used for describing places.

History shows how the language changed over many years. In the 10th or 11th century, it became a main language for government. This was used for both religious and civil administration. At first, people also used Koine Greek for religious things. Coptic was often used for writing about people who had died.

Over time, Old Nubian appeared more in the Bible. Eventually, Arabic also became a very common language in the area. Documents from the late 14th century show these different languages together.

Even though the language is old, it still connects to today. Modern Nobiin is a tonal language used by many people. In 2021, a designer named Hatim-Arbaab Eujayl made something new. He created a typeface called Sawarda.

A typeface is a specific style of printed letters. This new style is based on old manuscripts. It is used in books to teach people Nobiin. This helps keep the history of the Nubian people alive. It connects the ancient writing to the way people learn today.
