Some people call it Mexicano or Aztec. Most Nahua people live in central Mexico today. You can also find smaller groups living in the United States. The language has been spoken in central Mexico since at least the seventh century AD. It was the main language of the Mexica people. They were a very powerful group in Mesoamerica. Their influence helped the Nahuatl spoken in Tenochtitlan become a prestige language. This means many people looked up to it and used it.

Nahuatl has a very interesting way of building words. It uses a system called polysynthesis and agglutination. This means small fragments of words are strung together. Each fragment is called a morpheme and holds its own meaning. By joining these parts, speakers can make very long and complex words.

This way of speaking developed over a long time. It happened as Nahuatl lived alongside other Indigenous languages in Mesoamerica. Because of this, the language absorbed many different traits from its neighbors. It is a beautiful and intricate way to communicate.

Writing became a big part of Nahuatl history later on. After the Spanish conquest, missionaries introduced the Latin script. This allowed Nahuatl to become a literary language. During the 16th and 17th centuries, people wrote many things. They wrote poems, grammars, and administrative documents. They also created codices, which are ancient books.

There are many different varieties of Nahuatl spoken today. Some varieties are so different that people cannot understand each other easily.

It has the same legal status as Spanish in the regions where it is spoken. This happened under a law passed in 2003. This law protects the rights of the 63 other Indigenous languages in Mexico too. It is a very important part of Mexican culture.

You might already use Nahuatl words without knowing it! Many words moved from Nahuatl into Spanish. From there, they traveled into hundreds of other languages.
