These languages belong to people living in southern Mexico and northern Central America. At least six million Maya people speak these languages today. Most speakers live in Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. In Guatemala, the government recognizes 21 different Mayan languages by name. Mexico also recognizes eight different languages within its own borders. These languages are very important to the people who speak them. They help people feel a sense of shared identity and pride.

Many of these languages share special ways of working. They use relational nouns to show where things are in space. They also use a special group of words called "positionals." This is a feature that is typical of all Mayan languages. Some languages in this family also use a system called ergativity. This is a way of treating the subjects and objects of verbs. These traits help experts group the languages together. They show how the languages have interacted over many thousands of years. This interaction is part of a larger area called Mesoamerica.

All modern Mayan languages come from one very old language. Experts call this ancestor language Proto-Mayan.

It is believed that Proto-Mayan was spoken in the highlands of central Guatemala. Scholars have used a special method to rebuild more than 3,000 words from it. Around 2200 BC, the first big split happened in the language family. The Huastecan branch moved northwest toward the Gulf Coast of Mexico. Later, other groups moved into the Yucatán Peninsula or further south. These movements created the many different branches we see today. These branches include the Yucatecan, Quichean, and Mamean groups.

During the Classic period, the Maya used a special writing system.

This was a logo-syllabic script made of many different signs. People carved these signs into stone buildings and large monuments. They also wrote on pottery and bark-paper books called codices. We know of over 5,000 of these ancient inscriptions. This writing helps us understand history better than almost any other group in the Americas. Even though Spanish became the main language during colonial times, many Maya people resisted. The last independent Maya kingdom was not conquered until 1697.

Today, Mayan languages are still a very important part of life. While some languages are endangered, others are very strong. Many people use them at home and in their communities. In the United States, languages like K'iche' and Mam are used in immigration courts.
