The Maya religion is a deep and ancient belief system. It has existed for more than 2,500 years. Many Maya people live today in Guatemala and Belize. They also live in parts of Honduras and Mexico. Their traditions often mix with Roman Catholic ways. This mixing is called symbiosis. Today, these beliefs exist alongside many different Christian groups.

Ritual is a very important part of this faith. In the Yucatán, people call these customs costumbre. A village priest is often called a jmen. The Maya see the land as a sacred map. They believe ancestors and gods live in mountains, wells, and caves. Some people visit special waterholes in the mountains. These places might be homes for ancestors' helpers. Rituals are also tied to the calendar and specific days.

People go on long journeys called pilgrimages. These trips help connect different local communities. Some people visit thirteen sacred mountains. In the past, people traveled to Chichen Itza around the year 1500. They went to visit a large cenote, which is a sinkhole. Other pilgrims visited goddesses on islands near the Yucatán coast. Noblemen once traveled to the caves of Naj Tunich. They even left records of their visits on the cave walls.

Giving offerings is a way to renew a bond with the other world. People follow strict rules for these gifts. They might offer maize bread, cacao drinks, or honey. They also use flowers, incense, and even cigars. In the past, people offered animals like deer, dogs, and turkeys. Sometimes, they offered human beings during very hard times. This happened during droughts or when a ruler was buried. High officials also practiced bloodletting to show respect. They used small knives or stingray spines for this.

Special leaders help guide the community through these traditions. Priests are often organized into different levels. Some priests focus on the calendar or help with healing. In the past, many priests were part of the nobility. They held many jobs, such as being an oracle or an astrologer. Some people also act as diviners or seers. These leaders help keep the old stories and prayers alive. They ensure the community stays connected to their sacred history.
