Maya people see the land as sacred. They believe gods live in mountains, wells, and caves. Some people go on long trips to visit these places. These trips are called pilgrimages. They might visit thirteen sacred mountains or special islands.

People give gifts to the gods to keep a good bond. These gifts can be maize bread, flowers, or honey. In the past, people also offered animals like deer or turkeys. Some rituals even included blood to show respect. To get ready for big events, people might fast or bathe. This is called purification. It helps them enter holy spaces.

Special leaders help the community. Some are called priests, or jmen. They lead prayers and rituals for the group. Other leaders are diviners who can see the future. They help keep these ancient ways alive today.
