It tells the myths and history of the K'iche' people. These people are part of the Maya groups. They live in Guatemala and parts of Mexico. They also live in Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. The name Popol Vuh means "Book of the Community." It can also mean "Book of Counsel." In ancient K'iche' society, a woven mat was a symbol of unity. A mat was also used as a royal throne. This book helps us understand how the K'iche' see their world.

For a long time, these stories were shared by speaking. This is called an oral tradition. People told the stories to keep them alive. Around the year 1550, the stories were written down.

A Spanish priest named Francisco Ximénez recorded the text. He was a Dominican friar. He made a manuscript with two columns. One column had the K'iche' words. The other column had the Spanish translation. He used Latin characters to write the K'iche' sounds. This work helped save the stories for later generations.

The history of this book is quite complex. Ximénez worked in a town called Santo Tomás Chichicastenango. He likely recorded the work there in the early 1700s. His manuscript was kept by the Dominican Order for a long time. In the years 1829 to 1830, General Francisco Morazán expelled the clerics from Guatemala. The documents then went to the Universidad de San Carlos. Later, researchers like Carl Scherzer found the writings. Scherzer traveled to Guatemala in 1854. He found the text in a university library. He even published a copy of the Spanish parts.

Many people have worked to study and find the Popol Vuh.

In 1855, an abbot named Charles Étienne Brasseur de Bourbourg found the manuscript too. He took the volume back to France. Later, the collection passed to Alphonse Pinart. Then it was sold to Edward E. Ayer. Ayer donated his large collection to The Newberry Library in Chicago. The work became hidden again for many years. In 1941, Adrián Recinos rediscovered the manuscript at the library. Some experts believe Walter Lehmann found it in 1928. These discoveries allowed the world to read the text again.

The content of the book is full of wonder. It includes the Mayan creation myth. It also tells the story of the Hero Twins. Their names are Hunahpú and Xbalanqué.

These twins go on many adventures. The book also contains a history of the K'iche' people. It acts as a bridge to the past. Many old Maya documents were destroyed during the Spanish conquest. Because of this, the Popol Vuh is a rare and precious source. It shows us the beliefs and the lineages of a great culture.
